ICT takes center stage at conference

Joe Mjwara, a key figure behind State policy on telecommunications and information technology, will present both a Government and black economic empowerment perspective on the future of the telecommunications sector at the Mobility 2005 conference in June.Mjwara is Deputy Director-General in the Department of Communications and chairman of the ICT empowerment charter steering committee, and was one of the developers of the laws governing broadcasting as well as telecommunications in South Africa. He is currently responsible for the policy directorate in charge of the review, development and monitoring of policies for the Telecommunications, Broadcasting, Postal and Information
Technologies sectors. He will formally open Mobility 2005, a two-day event to be held at the FNB Conference Centre in Sandton, on June 8.

The conference is the culmination of the year-long Mobility 2005 research project on the current and future shape of mobile and wireless technologies in South Africa, being conducted by World Wide Worx. The project is sponsored by Cell C, First National Bank, Sentech and the Mobile Institute.

The research was conducted in six phases, and the keenly awaited results of the sixth phase, “The Impact of Mobile and Wireless Technology on the South African Consumer“, will be announced at the conference on June 9.

Industry speakers include Simon Camerer, Head of Marketing at Cell C, talking on the future of mobile communications in SA, Len Pienaar, head of First National Bank Mobile and Transact Solutions, on the relevance of SMS in the banking industry, Winston Smith, product manager for MyWireless at Sentech, on understanding 3G technology, and Gavin Penkin, director of Exactmobile, on how mobile services and applications can be taken to new levels.

Independent experts due to talk at the event include Arthur Goldstuck,  Managing Director of World Wide Worx, providing an overview and headline findings of the Mobility 2005 research; Leon Perlman, chairman of the Wireless Application Service Providers Association (WASPA), on mobile commerce and content regulation in South Africa; John Joslin, CEO of FutureProof Consulting, on creating world-class fixed-mobile converged networks in time for the 2010 World Cup; Peter Searll, director of Plus 94
Harris, on the Mobility 2005 research into the impact of mobile and wireless technology on the South African consumer,; and Dobek Pater and André Wills of Africa Analysis, presenting the findings of their research into the
future of mobile technologies in Africa.
